Dams

Dams monitoring represents a huge challenge in the field of Civil Engineering, due to their enormous dimensions and structural complexity.
Traditional monitoring metodology based on puntual sensor, both electrical or optical, is largely inadequate to ensure the complete safety for the dam, the downstream villages and, therefore, the people.
Distributed Optical Fiber Sensors, instead, are able to overcome the technological limits of traditional instrumentation and to guarantee a continuous and real time monitoring of the entire dam interested for its whole life-time.
Every signal of degradation of the structure is detectable at an early stage allowing timely maintenance interventions and so the preservation of the safety conditions.
In particular, by proper application on the dams, such a system can identify and localize fundamental events occurring such as leakages, intrusion and tampering, overflooding, deformations and so on.
